Engineer, R&D Technical Operations (Packaging)

POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT:

This position provides technical support for the Herbalife Innovation and Manufacturing (HIM-WS) site to facilitate new product introduction, assure supply continuity, and improve product quality and manufacturing process efficiency. This position will also provide expertise in both powder and liquid packaging processes in addition to providing support related to our formulations and product flow characteristics.  

DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: 

• Work closely with manufacturing, engineering, and maintenance to lead projects that would optimize our packaging systems
• Identify new packaging/and or processing technologies to facilitate efficiencies both in the Pilot Plant and manufacturing environments
• Assist with revising manufacturing procedures for blending and packaging (master batch records revisions).
• Provide support in the design, coordination, and commissioning of process and packaging equipment lines for both powder and liquids
• Understand and implement best practices for packaging and process automation accounting for key elements of packaging design and product properties.
• Work with in-house manufacturing and contract manufacturers to ensure that the process and packaging systems and procedures provide consistent operating conditions and the safety and integrity of finished products.
• Troubleshoot problems with components, materials and machinery processes in coordination with Quality, Production, Operations, Maintenance, vendors and OEMs.
• Draft protocols and execute packaging line and process capability trials in support of new product introduction along with product/process improvement.
• Support validation/qualification line work, including FAT, SAT, IQ, OQ & PQ, at HLF facility or outside partners to ensure machinery and processes meet all requirements.
• Work cross functionally with various departments to investigate issues related to raw material, and process design.  
• Assist with and understand simple formula changes (e.g., overages, excipient amount/grade) to support the manufacture of commercial products including rework protocols.
• Assist with review of formula and raw material specifications including packaging components.
• Prepare benchtop samples for raw material/process verification or product evaluation.
• Develop Pilot Manufacturing Batch Records and execute HIMWS pilots for process scale-up verification.
• Assist with executing protocols required for equipment and manufacturing process evaluations.
• Evaluate alternative Packaging components
• Assist in HIMWS process improvement initiatives that improve product quality, manufacturing efficiency and cost savings.
• Interacts with testing labs (HIM, HP1, and contract) to collect, and analyze data test results.
• Complete Technical Operations tasks within the Herbalife Nutrition project management system (Agile PPM system).

Required

Preferred

• Has working knowledge of Agile and Oracle systems
• Has working knowledge of pilot scale equipment.

Experience:

Required

• At least 2-3 years relevant experience in an Engineering role.
• Process Packaging experience, more specifically transferring powder and liquid food or nutritional supplements into bottles or sachets
• Experienced in working in a GMP environment
• Manufacturing process design for product introduction and scale up.
• Competent use of MS Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint

Preferred

• Has working knowledge of PLC systems
• Experience with New Product Process /Appropriate Product Lifecycle Management (e.g. Agile).
• Has working knowledge of Agile and Oracle systems
• Familiarity with nutritional and botanical ingredients through prior work experience
• Experience working with other departments that interface with R&D such as QA, QC, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain

Education:

Required

B.S. with a major in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or other related technical programs, or equivalent level of experience
